Create “New” Family Traditions in 2021

If you are reading this message, I am successful in attracting your attention in today’s world of constant change and distractions.  Perhaps the word that attracted you was “new”, family or traditions.  I used this oxymoron to produce a special effect that highlights our ability to make planned changes.   As we move into 2021 let us focus on creating “new family traditions” so we can move ourselves and our families forward into the world of tomorrow.

Traditions are something from the past that you want to carry forward to help shape the future.  They might be customs, rituals, habits, beliefs, events or actions.  These established traditions have transported us and our families safely and confidently through time to today.  Hurray for traditions!  Now is the good time to plan “new” family traditions to move us along and create resilient, strong family traditions.  Prepare for a balanced, healthier lifestyle in 2021 by asking yourself the two questions listed below. Use a sheet of paper or your smartphone to jot down your thoughts.  Yes, writing down thoughts helps embed ideas and lead us down the path to positive change.

What does a healthier lifestyle mean to YOU?

Here is a sampling of what some of our former OSU Extension program participants have said. A healthier quality of life means – reducing stress, preparing and eating more nutritious meals so I feel better, having more energy, using resources wisely and saving for the future.

What causes distress in MY life?

You more than likely have identified at least one of the following topics as a  harmful stress escalator –  too much on my plate both at home and work, changing family dynamics, working with others, economic uncertainty and increasing interface with digital technology.

Now it is your turn to answer the questions. Use paper and pencil or the Notes App on your smartphone or tablet to record your answers.  Look at your answers then prioritize to select one that you want to set a S.M.A.R.T. Goal to attain within the next 6 months.

Celebrate by tacking the SMART Goal on your refrigerator for all to see!
