Unite, Serve, and Transform on MLK Day to Create the Beloved Community

The Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service encourages Americans to volunteer to honor Dr. King’s legacy. Through service and volunteerism, we all have the power to bring people together, help others stand together against hate, build bridges, heal divides, and create the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dreams.

August 2023 marked the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. King’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech. His call for Americans to unite in pursuit of a shared vision of freedom and justice continues to inspire us six decades later to come together in service to ensure every individual is valued, respected, and treated with dignity and compassion. Service to others cuts through those forces that try to divide us.  It gives communities across the nation a way to build bridges and break down barriers and reveal our common humanity.

From individual volunteers to local organizations to national efforts, MLK Day is the only federal holiday designed as a National Day of Service. AmeriCorps is the federal agency for national service and volunteerism. In Ohio, one of many AmeriCorps programs across the state is Extension Public Health AmeriCorps. This year ServeOhio shared a list of 19 statewide service projects that will happen around the state to celebrate MLK Day. Commit this MLK Day to build a Beloved Community through unity, service, and transformation. Volunteer to bridge divides and create lasting change that will benefit our communities for years. Pledge to make a difference in your community and learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy through the following:

How to learn more

  • Find out what is happening in your local community and how you can participate. In addition to local newspapers, newsletters and radio, search online for local options. Points of Light is a national resource that lets you search for local volunteer opportunities, not only on MLK Day but also throughout the year. .
  • Use social media to share this badge and your commitment with others

  • Share your MLK Day story: Share photos, videos, and posts about your service with the hashtag #MLKDay
  • Check to see if any local historical or educational sites have special programs. For example, My Ohio lists some free and discounted events being held around the state.
  • To learn more about Martin Luther King, visit The King Center  and follow their social platforms.
  • Check out the library this weekend! Although the MLK Day national holiday might affect typical library hours, many libraries have online options for audio books and other resources. Whether you have young children at home or are looking for a good read yourself, find a book (including audio) or movie to learn more about Martin Luther King Jr and other Americans who have dedicated their life service to contribute to our communities.

For nearly 30 years, the impact of MLK Day of Service has increased as more Americans embraced the idea that citizenship involves taking an active role in improving communities where we live, work, and play. This MLK Day of Service, join us in service to strengthen ties to our communities and one another while addressing critical issues that divide us. Learn more and volunteer at AmeriCorps.gov/MLKDay.

About Patrice Powers-Barker

Patrice Powers-Barker, CFLE (Certified Family Life Educator) implements Ruby Green Smiths’ description of Family and Consumer Sciences, “where science and art meet life and practices.” The Mind and Body topic lends well with empowering families to evaluate their daily habits and to make individual as well as family goals to enact mindfulness and abundance. The “science and art” of mindfulness can be practiced throughout different aspects of life - from work and play to eating or parenting and education. Patrice loves spending time with family, treasuring the four seasons of Northwest Ohio and appreciating the abundance of her local community.
