Office Temptations

The past few weeks I have been walking past an array of foods in our office break room, including tortilla chips, crackers, chocolate, and cookies. Often we have donuts or pastries in our office to share as well. I try to bring my lunch every day but I am so tempted by all the goodies and treats that are at work. As a Family and Consumer Sciences Educator I try to practice healthy eating and make good, nutritious food choices. It is difficult to change an environment but there are small changes we can make for a more energetic, productive workplace!

Healthy Meeting FoodMany workplaces are instituting Healthy Meeting guidelines(PDF)Links to a PDF document.. Examples of food choices for healthy meetings and workplace environments would be low calories drinks (including water), whole grain options-such as wheat bread for sandwiches, low fat dairy options such as yogurt or skim milk, sauces and dressings served on the side, lean sources of protein, and fresh fruits and vegetables available. Fruit as a dessert is a great option. Vegetarian options should be provided. Consider your selections and portion sizes. If your company uses an outside resource there are tips to working with caterer and vending companies as well. The goal of healthy work environments is not to dictate what one should eat, but rather be a supportive effort to enhance overall lifestyle satisfaction.

We celebrate our birthdays at work by bringing in our own treat for our birthday. I have been known to bring in a veggie tray with dip or cut up fruit. Sometimes I receive a bit of teasing for this, but ultimately everything is gone by the end of the day. I often bring my own snacks of nuts or vegetables and hummus so I can stick to my eating plan. The more prepared you are the easier it is to make wise choices and keep your commitment to a healthy lifestyle in and outside of the workplace.Healthy Meetings
