Holiday Family Fun

As a family, spending time together is a FUNdamental part of the holidays! The holidays are a time when we can connect with our families, and it strengthens our relationships, regardless of age. Spending time together does not mean spending money—recent research suggests that even casual engagement fosters a connection with your children. So rather than letting the expense of family outings prohibit your time together check out the lists below for some seasonal and holiday fun!

Indoor Recreation

Indoor ice skating rinks, roller-skating rinks, indoor put-put, go-karting, and bowling, are all family-friendly activities and are relatively inexpensive. Museums, conservatories, planetariums, and performing arts centers can be another great way to spend time together in a meaningful and educational way. Last but not least, take advantage of local YMCAs and recreational centers for family-friendly physical activity!

Outdoor Recreation

Right outside your window is a winter wonderland for your enjoyment…Grab a sled and find a hill, make a snowman in your front yard, or have a snowball fight. Also, don’t forget to visit your local parks and state parks—a winter hike will reveal a much different scene than your summertime visits! And when you’re all done you can come inside grab some hot cocoa and snuggle up to get warm. Don’t let the cold of winter weather keep you inside—the outdoors are a great way to spend time together and stay active!

Baking and Cooking

The holiday season is full of traditions, many of which include food. Baking and cooking can be an excellent way to spend time together and teach your family about special family customs. Remember, you can incorporate healthy food choices into your family customs!

Holiday Card Making

Making holiday cards can be a great way to introduce new traditions to your family. It can also be a great way to get in touch with those you haven’t seen or talked to in a while either.

Crafts and Decorations

There are many online resources that have information on how to make different ornaments, globes, bookmarks, bells, wreaths, and so on. A lot of these crafts and decorations can be made inexpensively using things around your home. Look into some websites like Family Education, to find step-by-step directions.

Holiday Light Site-Seeing

Spending time as a family exploring holiday light displays is a great way to invigorate the holiday spirit and costs little to no money! Be sure to check out local events including holiday parades and festivals.

If you want more ideas here are some websites to help you plan your family outings on a budget!!
