It is not unusual to think about drink choices for hydration during the warmer summer season or during exercise. It is also important to “think your drink” in relation to so many of our drink choices being high in sugar. Research has shown the negative effects of dehydration on the brain such as impaired memory and challenges in focusing. Is the opposite true? Does enough hydration improve our brain function? Yes!
During these spring months of seasonal state testing for many students, what is the value of drinking enough water? The following examples are a timely reminder for students during this month of testing, and remember the brain benefits of drinking water don’t end after the school day. Not only does drinking water have positive effects on students’ test scores, but research also shows similar benefits for the adult brain.
“Drink to Think” is the title of the work of researcher Dr. Caroline Edmonds. Edmonds and others have looked at the positive effects of drinking enough water on both children and adults. A few ways that enough water consumption increases brain function:
- Reaction times are faster
- Better memory recall
- Improved happiness rating for youth
Choose water to drink as a preventative solution for healthy body and mind functions. We all should be drinking water throughout the year as well as throughout the day for optimal brain benefits. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) share suggestions for getting enough water every day. Here are a few ideas adapted from their list:
- Keep a water bottle with you on errands or at the work desk
- Select water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages
- Choose water when eating out
- Add a hint of flavor by infusing your water with Ohio fruits and vegetables like berries and cucumbers
