The New Year brings new opportunities. Sometimes we have great intentions with setting our goals as we turn the calendar pages, but soon fall back into our old habits and find ourselves retracing last year’s steps. Today while you are having a moment to yourself, ask yourself:
“What do I really want to do or accomplish in the next three months?” or “The next six months?” and “ The next year?”
As I put my goals on paper, I can break down the steps it will take to get me there in a timely manner, week by week. Sticky notes on the calendar work great as reminders to reach the end goal. Working together with other family members can help to gain support and the feeling of working together on a project. If we take time to make a plan, we will find that we can accomplish things a little at a time.
On a more personal level, “What would I like to change about my daily life?” Daily habits have a way of ritualizing our days. If you want a little time for meditation or exercise, it must be a planned commitment. Schedule it just like you would another appointment or school event. Taking time for yourself, gives you the benefit of being a better person for your family.
Grab a pencil and piece of paper. Start with one thing you’d like and give it a try. Post notes where you can see them for encouragement and share your goal with friends and family for support. If things don’t go right on schedule, don’t give up, just adjust your timeline. Join me as I strive to take charge of my time in 2010!
