We began and ended this past week in the Extension offices with discussions about chicken. The big news is that there will be no chickens or chicken products at Ohio Fairs this summer. But as well, Ohio State University Extension is looking for people to take part in a research study to consider the consumer’s work with chicken in their kitchen.
But a little about chickens. Ohio is the second largest egg producer in the country and home to 28 million laying chickens, 12 million broilers, 8.5 million pullets and 2 million turkeys. Ohio’s egg, chicken and turkey farms employ more than 14,600 jobs and contribute $2.3 billion to the state’s economy.
That is the production end of chickens. Now, consider the consumer end of chicken for just a moment. Chickens and eggs are a standard in most of our homes. As well, they are a reason to run to the store if you are ‘out’ of these products.
Ohio State University Extension is looking for participants to be involved in a research study to consider the use of poultry products and how they are used in your kitchen. You may be interested in becoming involved in this study.
Participants will need to use a phone that receives texts and have an active email account. As well, we are looking for parents or guardians of children aged 1 to 9 years old. This study only lasts 6 weeks, and all persons accepted into the study will be provided an honorarium, or cash as a thank you for their participation.
The researcher in charge of this study is Dr. Lydia Medeiros who has done quite a lot of work with food safety. What will you have to do? You will be asked to complete an online survey. Participants will gain some new ideas about the use of social media as well as a greater understanding of the foodborne pathogen, campylobacteri. For more information about safe food temperatures, click here.
Participants will be provided $10 at the beginning and another $10 at the end of the study for their participation. This program will begin in early July, but we will accept participants to begin through the first week of August.
Participants will be able to respond to the program from their phone or their computer. The only face to face meeting will be for the sign up which can happen at the participants’ convenience.
How do you sign up? Please send an email to Stehulak.1@osu.edu and provide me with your name, full address, phone number that can receive texts with the subject line, ‘interested in research study’.
Your help in this research study can provide a greater understanding of consumer belief and understanding of managing foodborne illness. And, it is always interesting to be involved in a research study!
