Healthy Living Resources is a telecast presented by the Family and Consumer Sciences program specialists that will focus on health, wellness, and the impact that stress has on our lives. Whether it be financial struggle, or chronic disease management, stress can creep up as a result of many of the day to day events that we face in our lives. Join us monthly as we interview Family and Consumer Sciences educators and other specialists who will discuss how we can address and hopefully prevent this from negatively impacting our overall health and wellness. In this episode, healthy finances program specialist Amanda Woods is joined by Franklin County Extension Educator, Jenny Lobb; Carroll County Extension Educator, Bridget Britton; and Kyle Strickland, who is the Senior Legal Analyst and Special Assistant to the Director at The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity.
In this episode
This month, with reflection and respect paid to the nationwide outrage and protests in response to the police killing of George Floyd, we aimed to have a conversation about what it means to be antiracist, the importance of engaging in these conversations despite feelings of discomfort, and working to raise antiracist children. As we discussed in this episode, antiracism work is critically important, and these conversations will help us carry this movement further. The National Museum of African America Culture and History created an antiracism resource, that reads:
“No one is born racist or antiracist; these result from the choices we make. Being antiracist results from a conscious decision to make frequent, consistent, equitable choices daily. These choices require ongoing self-awareness and self-reflection as we move through life. In the absence of making antiracist choices, we (un)consciously uphold aspects of white supremacy, white-dominant culture, and unequal institutions and society. Being racist or antiracist is not about who you are; it is about what you do”.
We encourage you to watch the video below, and begin to talk to your friends, family, and coworkers about how each of us an work to be antiracist.
