The Best Winter Foods

winter sceneAs winter arrives, temperatures drop and daylight hours are shorter. Mood and energy levels are also known to decline during these cold winter months as many tend to hibernate. It’s a perfect time to focus on adequate nutrition and enjoy foods of fiber, color and flavor. These foods will help keep you healthy this winter.

  • Clementines – These winter citrus are loaded with vitamin C and fiber. They also contain calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and potassium for strong bones and good muscle function.
  • Salmon – Tryptophan found in salmon is a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter aligned with mood regulation. Salmon is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which have shown in studies to manage depression.
  • Sweet Potatoes -A great source of fiber that are packed with Vitamin A and potassium.
  • Winter Squash – Rich in Vitamin A and carotenoids, known to benefits heart health and immunity while providing healthy skin.
  • Cauliflower – Noted for its high phytochemical content and potential to help prevent cancer and inflammation. Also rich in vitamins A, C and K. Cauliflower provides potassium, magnesium and fiber. Fiber promotes stable energy levels.
  • Brussel Sprouts – Low in fat, high in fiber and vitamin C. Helps to keep the immune system strong, heart healthy and lowers cholesterol.

Winter is a perfect season for getting together with friends and family around a relaxed, well-prepared meal. Enjoy the taste, texture and nutrition of these winter superfoods.
